Sonu Sheikh, one of the detainees, opened fire on the participants of the Hanuman procession, according to surveillance camera surveillance.

New Delhi:

Clashes between the two factions erupted violently during the Hanuman Jayanti procession on the 16th in the Jahangirpuri area of the capital Delhi.

Academic and vehicle arson incidents took place. Several people, including police, were injured.

Delhi police yesterday arrested two more people in connection with the violence. This brings the total number of people arrested in this case to 25.

Police said one of the detainees had confessed to giving glass bottles to the rioters to throw at the Hanuman Jayanti procession participants.

Another was Sonu Zak, who fired a shotgun at the crowd, which was discovered by surveillance camera footage.

Earlier, Sonu Zak’s wife was allegedly stoned by her relatives on police who took her away for questioning.

Several politicians and social media users have accused some people of trying to hoist the saffron flag at a mosque in Jahangirpuri. This led to stone-throwing and violence, they said.

Denying this, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana said no such attempt had been made and that members of both communities had been arrested in the case.

He added that those involved in violent clashes have been arrested regardless of their religion.

Earlier yesterday evening, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held consultations with Delhi Police officials. At the time, Jahangirpuri had ordered stern action against the accused in the violence case.
