There is a new Capablanca in Cuba, she is from Guanajay and her name is Dalila Toledano Fernández. She won the gold medal among the girls, in the mixed sub 12 chess tournament that was held in the Cuba Pavilion.

Already in the 2022 edition of the Buscando el Capablanca contest itself, the tenacious chess player won a bronze medal among the girls in the sub 10 category. But now she went for more: she anchored in 36th place (in general), with five points in eight rounds played by the Swiss system, and added 17 to his Elo coefficient.

Andrés Sintao Cruz, provincial commissioner of this discipline, shared the details and said that the event always enjoys wide participation, like this time, with the contest of 137 players.

The Women’s Fide Master (WMF) Ana Bárbara Sierra, youth national champion in 2019 and current coach in Guanajay, has guided Dalila in her first steps.

Another notable result was that of Wilber Ondar Hernández, from the Artemisa municipality, who placed 37th in the school category (under 16), among 102 competitors. He still scored five points, and added a remarkable haul of 158 to his Elo, revealed Sintao Cruz.

The provincial chess commissioner alluded to the number of Artemiseños in the tournament with an outstanding performance, either due to the position occupied or the resulting Elo, such as Adam Rodríguez León, from San Antonio de los Baños (seat 23, thanks to 5.5 points in all eight rounds).

In the Open tournament, MF Wilber Vargas Rodríguez, from San Antonio, rose to 48th place, with 5.5 points, while José Alejandro Hernández, from Guanajay, was in 71st with 5, and also added 5 to his Elo rating of 2079.
