HERA, the Commission’s new health authority, signed a contract with Bavarian Nordic in mid-June to purchase nearly 110,000 vaccines that can be used against monkeypox. It is the first time that money from the European budget has been used to buy vaccines that are donated directly to the Member States.

As with the corona vaccines, the doses are divided according to the population of each Member State. It has been agreed with the Member States that the countries with a high number of infections will enjoy priority with regard to deliveries. After Spain, Portugal, Germany and Belgium are next.

Since May 18, 2,682 infections with the monkeypox virus have been detected in 25 European countries. In Belgium, the latest weekly report from health institute Sciensano on June 21 mentions 77 confirmed cases and one probable case.
