MEXICO
In Mexico, the smoking ban previously only applied to public transport, bars, workplaces and restaurants, but from January 15 this year, the government extended the legislation to all indoor and outdoor public spaces, such as hotels, resorts, beaches, parks and all places where children they also turn around. The only legal places to smoke in Mexico are in private residences or private outdoor areas.

The country currently has one of the strictest anti-smoking laws in the world. Tourists who light it in public will be fined between $50 and $300, and those who refuse the sanctions can be jailed for up to 36 hours. The regulations on electronic cigarettes have also been tightened. These devices cannot be imported, sold or used in public areas.

COSTA RICA

Since 2012, Costa Rica has also had one of the strictest smoking regulations. Smoking is prohibited by law in taxis, bus stops, gyms, public buildings, bars, casinos and workplaces. In addition, smoking is prohibited in all closed buildings, and no separate “smoking areas” are allowed.

SPAIN, BARCELONA

Barcelona has banned smoking on beaches to prevent cigarette butts from being littered. More than 100 of the country’s 3,514 beaches were banned on July 1 last year, including the Costa del Sol and the Balearic Islands.

NEW ZEALAND

In New Zealand, the minimum smoking age will be raised every year from 2023. The goal is that the current age group of 14 and younger will never be able to legally buy cigarettes again, and the country will be completely “smoke-free” by 2025. The legislation will also reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in tobacco products and reduce by 90% number of retailers.
