PProfessor Gérard Krause headed the Infection Epidemiology Department at the Robert Koch Institute for 14 years, now the Epidemiology Department at the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research. As a doctor and infection epidemiologist, he has a different view of the pandemic than virologists and mathematicians.
WORLD: In the middle of summer, the number of cases is rising again in Germany – do we have to worry?
Gérard Krause: We must be concerned even if the number of hospital admissions and deaths is increasing significantly. That is not apparent at the moment. It is not surprising that the number of cases is increasing: the measures have been relaxed, and vacation trips have increased mobility. In addition, the delta variant is much easier to transfer. The combination of these factors results in more cases.
