On Tuesday, Turkey beat Austria 2:1 in the round of 16 of the European Championship, securing a place in the quarterfinals.

Demirals scored both goals for Turkey and marked the accurate shots with the gesture of the Turkish far-right organization “Grey Wolves”, which is banned in France and Austria.

“I’m proud to be Turkish and after the second goal I felt it completely. That’s how I ended up doing this gesture. I’m very happy that I did it. I saw people in the stadium who also did this gesture. It reminded me that I had it too in mind,” said the Turkish footballer after the match.

UEFA launched an investigation into the gesture and Demiral has been suspended for two matches. If Turkey does not reach the semi-finals, Demiral will not be able to participate in any of the next UEFA-supervised matches.

Turkey will meet the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

The final tournament of the European Championship is attended by 24 national teams, which were divided into six subgroups, with the first two place winners and the four best third place winners of each subgroup entering the playoff tournament.

The 2024 European Championship will be held in ten German cities from June 14 to July 14. The new European champion will be determined at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

In 2021, Italy became the European champion in London, which defeated England in the final in the penalty kicks.
