Szijjártó über US-Demokratie

Written by Rainer Ackermann

“Hungary’s government will no longer accept criticism from the US government about the state of our democracy,” said Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on Thursday in Budapest.

The reason is that “the most promising candidate for the presidency, Donald Trump, should be excluded from the election campaign.” Szijjártó responded to questions from journalists at a press conference with his North Macedonian counterpart in Budapest on Thursday. Referring to current domestic political developments in the USA, he asked all members of the US government to “put away their didactic statements about the state of Hungarian democracy”.

Disqualified just like that

The Foreign Minister no longer wants to have to listen to the Americans about how democracy and its institutions work here, and what the state of the rule of law is like in Hungary. “If you can simply disqualify one of the most promising candidates for the presidential election, then this country can no longer criticize our political system.”

The only peace president

The legal action against Donald Trump is also very bad news because he was the only US president to focus on peace in decades and Trump alone was able to make progress in the peace process in the Middle East. “We are certainly right to trust that with Donald Trump as US President, peace would soon come to our neighborhood. Just as we are equally convinced that this war would not have broken out in the first place if Trump had been President of the USA.”
