As US Vice President Kamala Harris has established herself as the Democratic presidential candidate, the Democratic leaders of the House and Senate have also declared their support for Harris.

According to Axios on the 23rd (local time), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (New York) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (New York) endorsed Vice President Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate.

“We are here today to support Harris,” Schumer told reporters at the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee’s Washington, D.C. headquarters.

“Harris and her candidacy have been an exciting and energizing experience for the House Democratic caucus, for the Democratic Party, and for the country,” Jeffries said.

The two House leaders’ endorsement of Harris comes two days after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race on Monday and endorsed Harris as his successor.

Several senior Democrats told Axios that they withheld their immediate support to give Harris room to gain support from rank-and-file lawmakers.

Vice President Harris has now secured the support of Democratic congressional leaders. Starting with President Biden, former President Bill Clinton and his wife, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (California) have also declared their support.

So far, 45 of 47 Democratic senators (95%) and 193 of 212 Democratic representatives (91%) have declared their support for Harris. All 23 Democratic governors have also expressed their support.

Vice President Harris secured far more than the majority of delegates needed to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination, according to CNN and AP’s own tallies the day before.

According to the New York Times (NYT), the Democratic National Committee (DNC) plans to conduct an online ‘roll call’ (voting by calling out names of each regional delegate) to select the presidential candidate as early as the 1st of next month. The DNC Rules Committee is scheduled to meet on the 24th to finalize the procedure.
