The Democratic Party of Korea continued its all-out offensive surrounding the suspicions of Ms. Kim’s intervention in the nomination process, saying, “Pretending not to see the suspicions of Ms. Kim’s intervention in the general election nomination process means that they will continue to manipulate state affairs in the future.”

Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae said this at a Supreme Council meeting on the 20th, “President Yoon Seok-yeol’s veto attempting to turn South Korea into a lawless land will only hasten the downfall of the regime.” Floor spokesperson Noh Jong-myeon also said in a written briefing, “The suspicions of Kim Kun-hee and Myung Tae-gyun’s intervention in the nominations have already reached the stage where the public is demanding an investigation,” and “According to the disclosed recording, Ms. Myung actually knew in advance the results of the ruling party’s nominations in certain regions for the last general election and the 2022 by-elections.” He then pressured the People Power Party, saying, “Did the ruling party fear the madam because they knew about ‘the madam’s nominations’?” and “If you are not an accomplice, cooperate with the special prosecutor’s law.” Myeong, known to be a close associate of former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Young-sun, is suspected of exerting influence on the nominations based on his friendship with President Yoon and Madam Kim.

The Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office announced on the 20th that it is investigating Mr. Myung on charges of violating the Political Funds Act by receiving money from former lawmaker Kim. Former lawmaker Kim was elected as a candidate of the People Power Party in the Changwon-si, Gyeongnam by-election held along with the June 1, 2022 local elections. The prosecution has identified the circumstances in which former lawmaker Kim gave 63 million won to Mr. Myung through his accountant in August of the same year, and is investigating the circumstances of the gift and the nature of the funds. The prosecution is reportedly considering converting Mr. Myung to a suspect.
