Increase in Dengue Cases and Deaths in Jamaica

The Ministry of Health & Wellness in Jamaica has announced a concerning rise in dengue cases and deaths associated with the virus. As of Tuesday, October 17, there have been 434 confirmed cases of dengue, out of approximately 2,107 suspected, presumed, and confirmed cases.

Tragically, seven deaths have been reported, with five classified as suspected cases and two as confirmed. This news has raised alarm among health officials and the general public.

In a statement released by the ministry, it was revealed that all parishes in Jamaica have experienced an increase in dengue cases this year compared to 2022. The highest number of cases, 600, was reported in Kingston & St Andrew.

However, St Thomas has the highest rate of dengue cases per 100,000 population, with a figure of 310.4. Following closely are Portland and St. Mary.

Young Jamaicans between the ages of 5 and 14 continue to be the most affected by dengue, with a rate of 240.4 cases per 100,000 population.

The ministry emphasizes the importance of understanding that dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness. Symptoms typically include fever, headache, joint and muscle pains. Rest and adequate hydration are usually sufficient for recovery. Acetaminophen/paracetamol is the recommended treatment for fever management.

It is crucial for the public to be aware that aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should not be used to treat dengue fever as they can worsen the severity of the disease.

In light of this information, it is imperative for Jamaicans to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of dengue. These measures include eliminating mosquito breeding sites, using insect repellents, and wearing protective clothing.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates to the public. It is vital for everyone to stay informed and follow the guidelines set forth by health officials to prevent the further spread of dengue in Jamaica.
