Confirmed Dengue cases in Italy rise to 572, of which 130 are indigenous, with the main outbreak in the Marche region, which saw a 93% drop in reported cases last week compared to the previous week. This is mentioned in the weekly update, referring to this virus only, of the surveillance bulletin.
From 1 January to 1 October 2024 the national surveillance system reports:
– 572 confirmed cases of Dengue (442 related to travel abroad and 130 indigenous cases, median age 43 years, 49% male and no deaths).
– Since October 1, several independent local transmission events of Dengue virus (DENV) have been identified in Italy:
– the largest outbreak, with 102 confirmed cases of infection, all symptoms and identification of Dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2), is located in a municipality in the Marche Region. In the current surveillance week (September 25-October 1), compared to the previous one (September 18-24), the number of cases reported by the date of onset of symptoms decreased by 93%. This sign of a significant reduction in the number of new cases of infection will be verified and confirmed in the coming weeks
– sporadic cases and more limited outbreaks of autosomal dominant DENV type 1, 2 and 3 infection have been reported in Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Veneto, Abruzzo and Tuscany. The ongoing epidemiological investigations, as of 1 October 2024, have not shown any evidence of epidemiological/microbiological links between them or the cases reported by the Marche Region.
– when all the reported indigenous cases were identified, control measures were implemented for the mosquito vector (of the genus Aedes) and prevention to ensure the safety of blood transfusions and transplants in the affected areas as envisioned in the National Arbovirus Plan (see the “National Plan). for Prevention, Surveillance and Response to Arbavirosis (PNA) 2020-2025”).
With the update, two new sections have been added to the dengue FAQ, related to who should be tested and its importance, which can be found here .
