(ANSA) – BRASILIA, SEPTEMBER 19 – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his Health Minister Nísia Trindade have announced the advancement of the national campaign against dengue in response to the significant increase in cases in the country, where, in the first eight months of 2024, more than 5,000 deaths and 6.4 million infections have already been recorded.
This year’s death toll is particularly alarming, as it was 1,179 in 2023 and 1,053 in 2022. According to the WHO, as of May, the South American nation accounted for 82% of the world’s suspected dengue cases.
“Every summer we are victims of the growth of dengue fever and other diseases. And this time, with the evolution of the climate issue that causes the planet to become hotter, we have decided to anticipate the launch of our campaign,” explained Lula.
Traditionally, anti-dengue actions are activated in late spring or early summer (Brazil is currently still in the winter season). Among the anti-dengue measures suggested by Lula is also the adoption of new technologies, such as the production of sterile mosquitoes in the laboratory. (ANSA).
