Dengue fever now a concern in Italy
Dengue fever, once considered a distant travel illness, is now making its presence felt in Italy. Typically associated with tropical and subtropical regions, it was commonly believed that only those who had vacationed in these areas and returned with flu-like symptoms and a skin rash could have dengue fever. Thailand, in particular, has been a significant source of infection for tourists over the years.
However, the situation in Italy is changing, with an increasing number of cases being reported. This development is of particular concern, as dengue fever is already prevalent in other long-distance travel destinations like Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, the Maldives, Brazil, Cuba, and Mexico.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Germany has been tracking cases of travel-related dengue fever. On average, they register between 600 and 800 cases every year. However, there have been instances where the numbers have exceeded these figures. Notably, in 2019, a total of 1,176 travel-related dengue cases were reported in Germany.
Due to the limited travel activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of dengue infections in travelers returning to Germany dropped significantly in 2021. The RKI received reports of only 60 cases during the year. However, the situation in Italy serves as a reminder that dengue fever remains a threat, even outside traditional hotspot regions.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease characterized by symptoms such as fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, rash, and mild bleeding. While it cannot be transmitted from person to person, it is primarily spread by the Aedes mosquito, which is abundant in tropical and subtropical areas.
As dengue fever gains a foothold in Italy, health authorities are urging travelers, especially those heading to countries where dengue fever is prevalent, to take precautions. These include applying mosquito repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and using mosquito nets in sleeping areas.
With the threat of dengue fever expanding beyond traditional travel destinations, it is essential for individuals to stay informed and take necessary measures to protect themselves from this potentially dangerous illness.
