Sa Kaeo Province Faces Dengue Fever Outbreak

Reports from Sa Kaeo Province reveal an alarming outbreak of dengue fever in four sub-districts. In response, the province has swiftly initiated disease control measures by establishing medical and public health emergency operations centers at both provincial and district levels.

The Public Health Doctor of Sa Kaeo Province, Mr. Tharapong Kapko, shared that Sa Kaeo currently ranks 38th in terms of dengue fever cases in the country. From 1 January to 16 September 2023, the province reported 737 cases, resulting in an illness rate of 130.95 per 100,000 population. Sadly, there has been one death, giving Sa Kaeo the highest sickness rate per 100,000 population.

The districts with the highest illness rates per 100,000 population are as follows:

  • Aranyaprathet District: 234.10
  • Khlong Hat District: 197.07
  • Watthana Nakhon District: 147.35
  • Mueang Sa Kaeo District: 125.49
  • Wang Nam Yen District: 121.05
  • Wang Sombun District: 77.85
  • Khao Chakran District: 76.85
  • Ta Phraya District: 54.01
  • Khok Sung District: 25.60

Furthermore, a death was reported in Aranyaprathet District.

In addition, the outbreak has been detected in 31 sub-districts, with 12 sub-districts considered high risk.

To address the situation, Sa Kaeo Province has established medical and public health emergency operations centers at the provincial and district levels. A joint meeting has been held involving the Sa Kaeo Provincial Public Health Office, hospitals, district public health offices, and medical experts in epidemiology. They convene weekly to devise strategies for disease control, prevention, and treatment.

The cooperation in controlling the dengue fever outbreak includes various measures:

  1. Community integration among the government, private sector, and the public to control disease outbreaks. This includes organizing volunteer activities to develop and maintain a clean environment in the community and eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
  2. Implementing the 3-to-3 disease prevention measures: keeping homes clean to prevent Aedes mosquitoes from roosting, properly disposing of garbage to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, and ensuring water storage containers are tightly closed to prevent mosquito eggs.
  3. Village health volunteers conducting surveys of larval breeding grounds and recording relevant information.

Aranyaprathet District in Sa Kaeo Province is reportedly experiencing the highest dengue fever outbreak in the region. The district public health department has collaborated with local government organizations and village health volunteers to continuously combat the outbreak.

Mr. Suda Sriken, Deputy Mayor of Ban Mai Nong Sai Subdistrict, shared that the Aranyaprathet District is taking proactive steps to prevent and control dengue fever. The Ban Mai Nong Sai Subdistrict Municipality has allocated a budget of over 200,000 baht annually for prevention efforts. They work closely with the Subdistrict Health Promotion Hospital, providing training on spraying processes and disease control measures, including the 3-to-3-1 approach.

Ban Mai Nong Sai Subdistrict is prioritizing control and prevention due to the high number of infections in the area. To date, 18 cases have been reported in the subdistrict, out of over 200 cases in Aranyaprathet District. The district public health department maintains control over the situation. Thus far, two deaths have been attributed to dengue fever in the Aranyaprathet District area.

Villagers in the area are involved in public relations efforts to disseminate information about dengue fever. They actively participate in controlling the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquito larvae and are vigilant about protecting their children, particularly those attending school. Symptoms of dengue fever include persistent fever, lethargy, and the appearance of red spots when pressure is applied to certain areas of the body.

“We must urgently take our children and those at risk to see a doctor,” urged Mr. Suda Sriken, the deputy mayor of Ban Mai Nong Sai Subdistrict Municipality.
