Dengue Fever Outbreak Reaches Alarming Levels in Sa Kaeo Province

Sa Kaeo Province is currently facing a severe dengue fever problem, particularly in the Aranyaprathet District. In response to the situation, the Provincial Public Health Office has implemented immediate surveillance and response measures. Sa Kaeo Province, ranked as the 40th province with outbreaks in Thailand, has also opened a medical and emergency operations center to tackle this issue. The outbreak has affected not only the provincial and district levels but also 7 districts and 30 sub-districts.

On September 8, 2023, Dr. Tharapong Kapko, a Public Health Doctor of Sa Kaeo Province, reported on the dengue fever situation in the area. The Provincial Public Health Office has been continuously monitoring and following up on this problem. Recent data reveals that Thailand has recorded a total of 79,475 dengue fever cases, with a rate of 120.09 per 100,000 population. There have been 70 reported deaths, corresponding to a death rate of 0.09 per 100,000 population.

The top five provinces with the highest infection rates are Trat, Nan, Chanthaburi, Chiang Rai, and Rayong. Sa Kaeo Province ranks 40th with a rate of 111.05 per 100,000 population. The data, which is based on outbreak week 34 and accurate as of August 26, 2023, shows that Health Zone 6 has identified a cumulative total of 12,261 patients. The sickness rate stands at 195.69 per 100,000 population, with 16 deaths and a death rate of 0.13.

Among the districts in Sa Kaeo Province, Aranyaprathet District has the highest rate of cases per 100,000 population at 208.09. It is followed by Khlong Hat District (197.07), Watthana Nakhon District (130.31), Mueang Sa Kaeo District (101.28), Wang Nam Yen District (85.06), Wang Somboon District (55.61), Khao Chakan District (55.41), Ta Phraya District (48.78), and Khok Sung District (18.28). There has been one reported death in Aranyaprathet District, resulting in a mortality rate of 0.16.

In response to the outbreak, an emergency operation center has been set up at the provincial and district levels in the 7 affected districts and 30 sub-districts. The operations will focus on surveillance and response to control the spread of dengue fever. The measures include 3 = notification within 3 hours of identifying sick individuals, 3 = destroying Aedes mosquito breeding grounds within 3 hours with the help of village health volunteers, and 1 = disease control within 1 day by the SRRT team.

Efforts to prevent such outbreaks have also been launched, with volunteers involved in environmental development and the elimination of Aedes mosquito breeding grounds. Campaigns are conducted monthly to disrupt the life cycle of the mosquitoes, including adding sand with temephos to eliminate larvae and spraying fog and chemicals. Village health volunteers assess the situation and report regularly, while each district organizes dengue fever campaign activities in different settings. The ultimate goal is to achieve HI = 0, CI = 0, and raise awareness about the risk of dengue fever.

It is crucial for all residents and agencies to strictly adhere to preventive measures, such as keeping houses and schools clean, removing containers with standing water, and properly disposing of garbage. Furthermore, it is advised not to use NSAIDs or aspirin and ibuprofen in suspected dengue fever cases. If anyone needs further information or assistance regarding these matters, they can contact the Sa Kaeo Provincial Public Health Office at 037-245-151-4.
