Suspected Cases of Dengue Fever Reported on Lake Garda in Italy

Further suspected cases of dengue fever have been reported on Lake Garda in Italy, leading to growing concern among affected communities. Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake and a popular holiday destination for Germans, has recently seen an increase in suspected cases of the disease.

According to a report by Südtirol-News, the first cases of dengue fever were reported in August, with two individuals exhibiting typical symptoms of the disease. Since then, more cases have emerged, bringing the total number of dengue fever cases in Lombardy, the region where Lake Garda is located, to 14, as stated in the latest report by the European Disease Authority ECDC. It is important to note that these cases are considered to be autochthonous, meaning that the individuals contracted the virus locally, rather than being infected in countries where the virus is native.

The presence of dengue fever in the area has prompted the Foreign Office to issue warnings to travelers visiting Italy since August 24th. Travelers are advised to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and seek advice from tropical and/or travel health professionals regarding vaccination against dengue fever.

Besides the risk of dengue fever, Lake Garda also poses other dangers to visitors. Dangerous animals such as snakes, bears, lynxes, and wolves inhabit the vicinity, and there are areas of the lake that can pose risks to swimmers.

Dengue fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes and is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), an estimated 400 million people worldwide are infected with the virus annually. While most people experience mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, severe cases can lead to abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding, exhaustion, and even shock. Typical symptoms include fever, headaches, body aches, and occasionally a skin rash.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that dengue epidemics often occur seasonally, with transmission peaking after rainy seasons. The mosquito population, influenced by various environmental factors, plays a crucial role in the spread of the disease.

The suspected cases of dengue fever on Lake Garda were initially reported in the towns of Manerba del Garda and Padenghe sul Garda in the southwest of the lake. As per the ECDC, other cases have also been identified in Lombardy since August, and there is a possibility that more cases could arise throughout Italy. The diurnal Aedes mosquito is believed to be the primary vector for transmitting the virus.

The affected communities on Lake Garda have implemented measures to contain the spread of dengue fever. Residents are advised to prevent the accumulation of water, as this provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Wearing long, light-colored clothing, applying insect repellent, and installing mosquito nets on doors and windows are also recommended preventive measures. The Italian health authority has also taken action to prevent and identify additional cases of the disease.

As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for residents and travelers to remain vigilant and take appropriate measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Seeking professional advice regarding vaccination and following guidelines from health authorities will help to minimize the risk of dengue fever on Lake Garda and in the surrounding areas.]
