Lake Garda is facing a growing fear of dengue fever as cases of the tropical disease have been reported. In response, holiday resorts in the area have taken immediate action to mitigate the spread of the virus. An anti-mosquito decree has been issued to combat the alarming situation.

The virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites, and with the presence of dengue cases in the region, the alert level in Lombardy has been increased. To address the situation, a specialist company has been tasked with spraying insecticides on affected streets, while residents have been called upon to do their part in driving away mosquitoes and protecting themselves from bites.

The municipalities of Manerba and Padenghe on Lake Garda have implemented anti-mosquito measures in an effort to prevent further spread. Local Italian media reports that two cases of dengue fever have already been confirmed in these areas, emphasizing the need for prevention rather than scaremongering.

In an attempt to curb the transmission of the dengue virus, the mayor of Manerba del Garda, the most affected municipality, has ordered special measures to be put in place. According to the regulation, residents are advised to wear long clothing to cover their skin and protect against mosquito bites. The use of insect repellent is also strongly recommended. Additionally, steps are being taken to eliminate standing water, such as water accumulations in flower pots, as mosquitoes multiply in such conditions. Mosquito nets on doors and windows are advised to prevent entry into homes, while smoke spirals and electric heaters can help repel mosquitoes outdoors and indoors, respectively.

The dengue virus is transmitted exclusively through the bite of diurnal mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, including the yellow fever mosquito and the Asian tiger mosquito. Complications from dengue fever can be life-threatening, with symptoms resembling severe flu-like illness. It is crucial to note that there is no direct human-to-human transmission, and the mosquito must have previously bitten an infected person.

Since January 2023, Italy has already reported almost 50 cases of dengue fever. The two cases on Lake Garda are not isolated incidents, as other countries such as Croatia, France, and Germany have also recorded instances of the disease. Recognizing the symptoms of a dengue infection is vital, although they closely resemble those of influenza.

In addition to dengue, there is growing concern about the spread of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in Europe. This mosquito species is considered “warmth-loving” but has adapted somewhat to changing climatic conditions, spreading to over 128 countries, including Germany. The Asian tiger mosquito has been labeled as the world’s deadliest animal by Bill Gates due to its ability to transmit over 20 viruses, including dengue, West Nile, chikungunya, and Zika.

While individual protective measures against mosquito bites are important, there is now a vaccine available for dengue virus. Since 2023, a two-dose vaccine has been made available for immunization, with the doses administered three months apart.

As the fight against the dengue fever outbreak continues on Lake Garda, authorities and residents are on high alert to prevent further transmission of the virus. Immediate action is being taken, prioritizing public health and safety in the face of this alarming situation.]
