He dengue in Mexico has become a serious problem due to its worrying increase in some regions. According to reports from health authorities, until epidemiological week 44 of 2023, 42,203 cases have been confirmed. The figure represents an increase of 333% compared to the same period of the previous year.

This rebound is attributed to the presence of a new variant (serotype) of the dengue viruspossibly imported from Central or South America, according to reports from the Ministry of Health (SSa).

The states with the most cases of dengue in Mexico

The situation is more evident in Yucatán, where 22.3% of cases are registered, being the most affected region in the country. While Quintana Roo and Morelos are the next entities with the most cases, reporting 4,046 and 3,307 respectively. The most affected population is made up of people between 10 and 19 years old.

Faced with this scenario, the importance of preventive measures is reinforced, such as the elimination of mosquito breeding sites and raising awareness against bites.

Tips to prevent dengue in Mexico

To prevent the transmission of the disease, it is necessary to carry out the following actions.

Eliminate stagnant water

Mosquitoes require minimal amounts of water to reproduce, so it is essential to wash, brush and cover containers and places that store water.
Change the water in vases and animal waterers at least every three days.
Make sure containers do not have slots to prevent egg laying.

Create barriers against mosquitoes

Clothing is the first line of defense, so it is recommended to wear light pants and long-sleeved shirts or clothing that covers the body.

Have protected windows and doors

It is recommended to use mosquito nets on doors and windows at home, and keep them closed when possible.

Protect yourself for outdoor activities

Avoid areas with large populations of mosquitoes, such as humid places where outdoor recreational or sports activities are carried out. This is because when you do activities outside the home, you can attract more mosquitoes due to the carbon dioxide we exhale or due to body heat and lactic acid produced when sweating.

Learn to identify the mosquito that causes dengue

Observe the characteristic color of the insect: black or with white spots or rings on the legs and back. Pay attention to the size: about 5mm in length. Take into account its behavior: it bites during the day in shade or areas protected from direct sunlight.
