Dengue, Zika and chikungunya will cost the Brazilian economy 15.1 billion reais (US$3 billion) in 2024. The projection was presented by Fiemg (Federation of Industries of the State of Minas Gerais).

In addition to affecting the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), the three arboviruses will cost health 5.2 billion reais (US$ billion) in tests, consultations and medications.

According to the study, diseases can prevent the creation or eliminate more than 214 thousand jobs.

The numbers were calculated from confirmed cases and the Ministry of Health’s projection that 4.2 million Brazilians will be infected by one of these diseases in 2024.

The country registered this Thursday (7) 1,289,897 probable cases of dengue, 66,953 of chikungunya and 1,318 of zika.

The calculations to determine the impact on GDP also took into account the number of days of absence from work by infected workers – seven, on average, according to the entity – and the cascading effect that this causes in the economy.
