Dune It is getting closer to becoming a trilogy. The second installment of the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novels already made it quite clear that its director, Denis Villeneuve, was thinking about continuing to address the universe of Paul Atreides and company. The sequel leaves many plots unfinished, or even newly opened, and even introduces key characters for the future of the saga, such as Anya Taylor-Joy, who is barely seen in a vision of the protagonist.

The secret of La Oreja de Van Gogh’s debut: his first album was recorded with other musicians because they “didn’t play well”

The commercial success of the film has been added to these intentions. Since its premiere on March 15, the film has raised funds. more than 630 million dollars (250 million in the US and the rest outside), with options to exceed 700 million worldwide. It is, at the moment, the highest-grossing film internationally of 2024 and more than recovers its hefty budget of 190 million. A result that also makes it clear that interest in the saga has been increasing, since it improves the data of the first part, which in a very different scenario (with Covid still causing havoc) barely exceeded 400 million.

It was a matter of time before some clue was given about a third part that Villeneuve had already said he wanted to film. For now, it has been one of the production companies involved, Legendary, that has announced that the filmmaker met with them starting to work on the development of this sequel which, a priori, should adapt the book Messiahknown in Spain as Dune’s messiahand whose action takes place twelve years after Paul Atreides’ victory in the Battle of Arrakeen and after taking control of the Empire of a Million Worlds.

Legendary has also reported that it has acquired the rights to the book Nuclear War: A Scenario, by Annie Jacobson and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize with the idea that Villeneuve will also direct its adaptation. A project that adds to a list that has more and more titles, since Villeneuve also intends to make his sought-after version of Cleopatra and his version of the novel by Arthur C. Clarke, Rendezvous with Rama. We will have to see how everything fits into his agenda and what project he gives priority to direct after Dune 2although the success of the film surely makes Warner Bros. want me to work on its third part as soon as possible.
