The Danish government presented, this Friday, October 27, a modified bill to ban the burning of the Koran on its soil, after criticism denouncing in a first version restrictions on freedom of expression and difficulties in implementation. “The bill has been narrowed to specifically target the inappropriate treatment of scriptures with significant religious significance,” the Justice Department announced in a statement. Originally it was intended to cover desecration of all objects of significant religious significance.

The bill must now be discussed in session on November 14 by the Folketing, the Danish Parliament. At the end of August, the government announced that it wanted to legislate on the subject following the burning of the Koran on its soil which had aroused anger within Muslim countries and threatened national security.

Terrorist threat intensifies in Denmark

In Iraq, for example, hundreds of demonstrators supporting the influential religious leader Moqtada Sadr attempted to march towards the Danish embassy in Baghdad at the end of July. The first project was criticized on the one hand by some who saw it as a return to the offense of blasphemy and on the other by legal professionals who feared difficulties in implementation.

“With the changes we are proposing today, the law will be easier to understand, including for the police and the courts,” assured Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard, quoted in the press release, noting that the terrorist threat on the country had intensified.
