For people who want to travel from Germany to Denmark, it will be easier in the future: Denmark is relaxing its border controls. ID or passport now have to be shown less frequently.

Commuters and travelers on their way to Denmark are now less likely to have to show their ID. The Danish border controls introduced years ago were relaxed on Friday night. The changes should ultimately ensure that you are checked much less frequently at the border crossings on the way north.

According to the Danish Ministry of Justice, it is planned that the police resources released as a result will flow into the fight against cross-border crime. The border controls to Denmark’s northern neighbor Sweden are now completely eliminated.

Danish border controls often criticized

In the Schengen area, to which 27 European countries belong, there are actually no stationary identity checks at the borders. In the course of the 2015 refugee crisis, however, several countries introduced temporary controls that have to be extended every six months. Denmark took her in at the beginning of January 2016 at the border with Germany and from mid-November 2019 also at the border with Sweden.

Especially in the German-Danish border area, there has been repeated criticism that Denmark has extended the controls at the 13 crossings and for travelers in trains and ferries with varying reasons. A report by the European University of Flensburg classified the Danish approach as disproportionate.

Denmark: Relaxed border controls only for the time being

The new Danish course for the controls should now apply temporarily until November 11th. Above all, it is intended to make it easier for commuters to cross the border – however, details are not yet known.

The Danish government considers it justified for several reasons that the entry controls at the German border, unlike those with Sweden, will remain in place to a limited extent. She justified the step with the insecure situation due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, a serious terrorist threat, a threat from foreign secret services and the migratory pressure in Europe.
