Denmark ramps up offshore wind power

Already at the forefront of climate transition, Parliament is voting for an acceleration of renewable energies.

On May 19, 2022, at the port of Esbjerg in the North Sea, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen brought together her German, Belgian and Dutch counterparts to announce a joint ambitious plan to create “Europe’s green powerhouseand break free from dependence on Russian gas as quickly as possible in response to the crisis in Ukraine.

The four countries bordering the North Sea intend to install 65 gigawatts of offshore wind turbines in 2030 and 150 gigawatts in 2050 to provide the electricity needed for 230 million homes. They would alone represent half of the objective set by the EU for offshore wind power by 2050. “We want to quadruple our total capacity in offshore wind power by 2030 and by ten by 2050 in Europe”said Mette Frederiksen, whose country is the European wind power leader. “A vision that must become reality and we are determined to achieve it“, she assures then.
