Denmark’s adoption of law banning Quran burnings a “historic” decision (ICESCO)

Rabat – The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) has expressed its “great appreciation” of the adoption by the Danish Parliament of the law banning and criminalizing the burning of the Quran and holy books, calling it a “historic decision.”

ICESCO, whose headquarters is based in Rabat, said in a statement that this decision demonstrates “responsibility towards any behavior that undermines religious sanctities” and reflects “the efforts of the Danish authorities in the fight against extremist and racist discourse inciting hatred.”

Welcoming this “historically wise decision”, ICESCO called on other countries facing sacrileges to follow Denmark’s example.

The Organization also urged “all reasonable voices, decision-makers and influential actors in the international community to loudly demand the defense of sacred texts and express their appreciation for Denmark’s historic decision, in order to ensure an atmosphere of trust conducive to mutual understanding, far from intolerance and isolation.”

The 179-member Danish parliament passed the law criminalizing the burning of the Koran and holy books after lengthy debate, with a majority of 94 votes. The new law stipulates that violators will be fined or imprisoned for two years.
