In these last few weeks, homemade recipes that go viral on TikTok has left dentists worried. Like the use of charcoal which, according to web users, helps to whiten teeth, or the mixture of lemon and baking soda. Both have been discredited by dentists as actually helping to destroy tooth enamel.

The trend of the moment is considered even more serious by professionals in the area, young people are using hydrogen peroxide to gargle and mouthwash to whiten their teeth. The practice is not recommended by dentists who point out the cause of an imbalance in the oral microbiota, causing canker sores and burns, and can lead to a series of infections and inflammations in the oral region.

“The hydrogen peroxide bought at the pharmacy, for example, was not made for this purpose, but to cure inflammation or injuries. In the office, for tooth whitening, we use a professional gel that contains hydrogen peroxide in its composition, however, it is controlled and we use gingival barriers and trays to protect the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the gums, tongue and lips.” explained the dental surgeon, Alana Rinco to the newspaper O Globo.

The professional also claims that the liquid in contact with these tissues can cause cracks, canker sores and severe burns. Hydrogen peroxide can also kill good bacteria that protect the region from opportunistic bacteria, fungi and viruses, known as oral microbiota imbalance. Which causes new inflammations, tooth sensitivity and infections.

“All of this came about because of this whitening gel that has hydrogen peroxide in the composition, but it is for professional dental use, only a dentist can buy and use it with reservations and protective material so as not to cause injuries to the patient.” claims dentist.

According to Alana Rinco, who has treated patients with burns due to the continuous use of hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash, The recommendation is to immediately suspend the product and use a specific ointment to heal the wounds and burns. Depending on the type of infection, severity and the doctor’s indication, the use of oral medications may also be recommended.
