Denzel Washington: Why Oscars Don’t Matter to Him

by Ahmed Ibrahim

LOS ANGELES, August 14, 2025 — Denzel Washington, a two-time Oscar winner, stated he doesn’t prioritize awards like the Oscars because they weren’t his initial motivation for acting.

Washington Prioritizes Divine Reward Over Accolades

The acclaimed actor revealed his perspective on fame and recognition.

Key Takeaways:

  • Denzel Washington isn’t motivated by Oscars or similar awards.
  • He believes divine reward supersedes earthly accolades.
  • Washington has won two Academy Awards and received 10 nominations.
  • Despite Oscar snubs, he remains unbothered and focused on growth.

During a recent interview, the veteran actor admitted, “I don’t do it for Oscars.” He elaborated, “I don’t care about that kind of stuff.” Washington, who is 70, added that there have been times he won when he shouldn’t have, and times he didn’t win when he should have. His sentiment is clear: “Man gives the award. God gives the reward.”

Washington confessed he is “not that interested in Oscars,” even though people frequently ask him about them. He described his pragmatic view: “People ask me, ‘Where do I keep it?’ Well, next to the other one.” He clarified, “I’m not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it.” The actor posited that on his final day, the Oscars would be of no use, stating they “won’t help get him into heaven.”

He quipped that as long as God says, “Now, get on up here,” he will be alright.

Washington’s career boasts two Academy Awards. His first was in 1997 for Best Supporting Actor in Glory. The second came in 2001 for Best Leading Actor in Training Day. In total, he has been nominated 10 times.

Even when notably snubbed for an 11th Oscar nomination for his role in Gladiator II, Washington remained unfazed. He shared his perspective with The New York Times: “Listen, I’ve been around too long. I’m getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more — and that’s exciting.”
