Date: September 20, 2023

In a recent report by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, alarming information about the water situation between September 15 and 20, 2023, has been revealed. The report highlights the need for close monitoring due to the potential dangers posed by heavy rain and accumulated water, which can lead to flash floods, water overflowing banks, and widespread flooding in various areas. To ensure public safety, the government is issuing recommendations for individuals to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

Dr. Saman Futrakul, the Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Office 7 in Khon Kaen Province, has expressed deep concern for the well-being of residents residing in flood-prone areas. Urging people to remain vigilant, Dr. Futrakul advises citizens to pay close attention to government news updates and to be prepared for potential dangers associated with flooding.

To help citizens prepare for potential emergencies caused by flooding, including the risks of rapids and electric currents, the government has provided a comprehensive list of essential items to include in emergency kits. These items include dry food, canned food, ready-to-eat meals, cooking materials, flashlights, batteries, medicine, communication tools, personal hygiene items, and clean water containers that can provide enough water for 3-5 days.

Additionally, the government advises individuals to ensure the safety of important documents and valuables by keeping them in secure locations. Pets should also be accommodated in separate housing to prevent the spread of animal diseases during floods.

Residents are cautioned to strictly adhere to safety guidelines during flood situations. It is advised not to venture outside to collect vegetables or swim in flowing waters due to the risk of being swept away by strong currents or drowning. Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed, and people should avoid swimming or fishing at night. Furthermore, individuals with chronic illnesses, such as epilepsy, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, should not be left unattended.

To prevent diseases and health hazards associated with flooding and standing water, the government advises citizens to avoid throwing garbage or waste into floodwaters and to store refuse in tied plastic bags in dry places. Children should not be allowed to play in floodwaters alone, as the risk of drowning and infection from contaminated water is high. It is also recommended to wash the face and eyes with clean water to prevent conjunctivitis if flood water splashes or dust enters the eyes. Eating cooked, hot, and clean food is strongly encouraged to prevent food poisoning and diarrhea.

If it becomes necessary to wade through water for an extended period, individuals are advised to wear boots and thoroughly clean their bodies with clean water afterward.

The government has established a Complaint Receiving Center at the Office of Disease Prevention and Control 7 in Khon Kaen, with a hotline available at 043-222818-9 ext. 237. Residents are encouraged to seek further information or assistance if needed.

It is essential for communities to stay informed, heed the government’s warnings, and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period of heightened water-related risks. By following the recommended guidelines and being prepared, individuals can mitigate the potential dangers posed by flooding.
