Government Warns of Dangers from Flooding and Provides Safety Recommendations

September 21, 2023

Khon Kaen, Thailand – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has issued a report on the water situation from September 15th to September 20th, 2023, urging citizens to be cautious of potential dangers caused by heavy rain and accumulated rain. The risks include flash floods, water overflowing banks, and flooding in many areas. The government is providing crucial information for citizens to stay safe during these conditions.

Dr. Saman Futrakul, the Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Office 7 in Khon Kaen Province, expressed concern for the safety of people in the affected areas. He advises residents to always observe and listen to news from the government and be prepared for the dangers that can come with flooding.

To mitigate risks and ensure the safety of residents, Dr. Futrakul recommends the following preparations for flooding:

1. Prepare essential items such as dry food, canned food, and ready-to-eat food.
2. Gather materials and equipment for cooking, including a flashlight with batteries and communication tools.
3. Stock home medicine and personal medicine for people with chronic diseases.
4. Equip a first aid kit with personal hygiene items, baby food, and sanitary products.
5. Have several large, clean containers for holding water and enough water for 3-5 days.
6. Include powdered sugar and mineral salts for potential diarrhea.
7. Prepare a large trash bag for collecting all waste and rope for tying it.
8. Have plastic bags for putting garbage in.
9. Use mosquito repellent, wear long-sleeved and long-legged clothing to prevent mosquito bites.
10. Keep important documents and valuables safe.
11. Move electrical outlets and appliances to higher ground or shut off the electricity to prevent electric shock.
12. Ensure separate housing for pets since they may be at risk of animal diseases.
13. Always carry readily available buoyancy equipment, such as an empty gallon bucket or plastic water bottle with a cap.

When facing a flood situation, Dr. Futrakul advises residents to avoid going out to collect vegetables, swim, or fish due to the strong water currents that may result in being swept away or drowning. It is important not to drink alcoholic beverages, wear thick, heavy clothing that holds water, go fishing at night, or enter the water after eating new food to prevent stomach cramps. Additionally, individuals with chronic illnesses such as epilepsy, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease should not be left alone.

Parents should closely supervise children and ensure they do not play in the water without a safe area designated for them. Educating children about flood dangers is essential, and floating equipment like life jackets, coconuts, or empty containers should be readily available.

There are also health risks associated with flooding, including respiratory system diseases such as influenza and pneumonia, food poisoning, diarrhea, leptospirosis, conjunctivitis, and dengue fever. In addition, residents should be cautious of poisonous insect bites/stings and parasites found in floodwater, such as threadworms.

To prevent diseases and health hazards that come with floods or flash floods, the following measures are recommended:

1. Do not dispose of garbage or waste into floodwaters. Store it in a tightly sealed plastic bag in a dry place.
2. Ensure young children are not left alone in the water and avoid water that may be contaminated.
3. If flood water splashes into the eyes or dust enters the eyes, wash the face and eyes thoroughly with clean water to prevent conjunctivitis.
4. Consume cooked, hot, and clean food to prevent food poisoning and diarrhea.
5. Wear boots when wading through water for an extended period and clean the body with clean water afterward.
6. Seek information or assistance from the Department of Disease Control hotline at 1422.

With these recommendations, the government aims to protect citizens from the potential dangers associated with flooding. Stay informed and prepared to ensure your safety during these challenging conditions.
