The Department of Disease Control is taking proactive measures to combat the spread of dengue fever in Thailand. Acting Director-General Dr. Thongchai Keeratihatthayakorn announced that the department is in the process of creating a “Gold Card” program that will allow individuals to withdraw mosquito repellent for free. This initiative is part of the department’s efforts to control, prevent, and reduce the spread of dengue fever.

Dr. Thongchai also revealed that the department is currently preparing a disease forecast and health hazards report for 2024. This report will be presented to the National Communicable Disease Committee and the Minister of Public Health to assess the current disease situation and make predictions for the coming year.

The department’s decision to provide free mosquito repellent is based on the observation that many dengue fever patients did not apply mosquito repellent, leading to a high number of cases being treated at home. By making mosquito repellent readily available, the department hopes to encourage more people to use it as a preventive measure against dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

However, Dr. Thongchai noted that the distribution of mosquito repellent as a medical supply is not yet included in the national health security benefit package. The department will need to present academic information to the Gold Card for consideration into benefits in order to continue the dispensing of mosquito repellent.

The “Gold Card” program will play a crucial role in ensuring that mosquito repellent is accessible to those in need and will contribute to the overall efforts to control and prevent the spread of dengue fever in Thailand.]
