The Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health has issued a warning to the public as Thailand enters the winter season. This announcement comes as the Meteorological Department announced Thailand’s transition into winter, with some areas experiencing exceptionally cold weather, especially in the northern and northeastern regions. Dr. Thongchai Keeratihatthayakorn, Acting Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, emphasized the importance of staying healthy and preventing sickness during this winter season.

The department has identified four common communicable diseases and two important health threats that people should be aware of to reduce the chance of illness and death. The first group includes respiratory system infectious diseases such as influenza and pneumonia, with specific symptoms and precautions highlighted. Additionally, COVID-19 remains a concern and people are urged to get vaccinated to prevent severe illness and death.

The second group includes gastrointestinal and water-borne diseases, specifically viral diarrhea, which can be prevented by maintaining hygiene and consuming clean, cooked food and water. The third group focuses on other important communicable diseases, such as measles, with details on symptoms and preventive measures. The department also warned about the health hazards related to cold weather, including the importance of warm clothing, nutrition, and avoiding alcoholic beverages.

Furthermore, the public has been advised to be cautious of inhaling toxic gases from gas water heaters to prevent sudden deaths. Dr. Thongchai also emphasized the need for cooperation from tourism-related agencies to provide guidance and prevent accidents for tourists, especially those with underlying health conditions. Motorists have been reminded not to drink alcohol or take intoxicants for their safety and that of others on the road.
