München The pandemic is over, but the fear of months of delays in the delivery of essential electronic components has remained. “Both our customers and we ourselves now have components for twelve weeks in stock,” says Christoph Antener, head of purchasing at electronics manufacturer Katek, the Handelsblatt. “In this way we ensure that we can continue working for several months, even if the deliveries are not made.”

Whether displays, microcontrollers or battery cells: like Katek, companies throughout Germany are still trembling for the urgently needed components, which they source almost entirely from the Far East. The pandemic has made companies aware of the enormous risk they are taking in individual areas.

Screens are one example: “95 percent of the displays that are built into machines, for example, come from half a dozen manufacturers in China,” says Manager Antener. “This is downright insane.”
