Depression: can you simply inject depression away with botox?

by time news

“Off label”, without approval. Tillmann Krüger chooses this treatment method time and time again. The psychiatrist heads the Clinical Psychology and Sexual Medicine department at the Hannover Medical School – and he has long been injecting his depression patients with Botox, a drug that is approved for migraines and wrinkles – but not for treating a mental illness.

Kruger patients therefore have to pay 100 euros per treatment themselves, unless they take part in a study. But still, says Krüger: “The patients are enthusiastic.” For many, Botox is the alternative to classic psychotropic drugs against depression. The antidepressant effect lasts for three to six months, then the effects of the neurotoxin wear off and you have to inject again.

Is it really that simple? Can you inject depression away like wrinkles? In fact, botox has helped fight depression in several studies.
