Deprivation for spiritual reasons? Swg: three out of ten Italians have done it

“Self-imposed physical deprivations are part of a series of rituals that have always united very different cultures and religions. These weeks, in which Lent for Christians and Ramadan for Muslims take place at the same time, give us a clear example of this phenomenon. Deprivations for spiritual reasons are or have been implemented by a significant part of the population, albeit a minority (31%) and are mainly aimed at particular categories of food or alcoholic beverages”. This was revealed by the latest Radar SWG published (25 – 31 March 2024).

“Those who have experienced these practices say that it has not always been easy to respect this self-imposed decision although 90% declare that they have finally managed to complete them. Deprivation is therefore not something for everyone (67%). But why deprive yourself of something, even for a limited period of time? The most shared explanation tells us about a need for inner research, something that can give us greater personal awareness (51%) and help us focus on essential things (51%)”, we read.

“In short, something that can make us feel good (48%). However, this opinion is not shared by everyone. The perception of those who believe that renunciations are a weapon of religious control (53%) or that they are senseless choices (50%) is significant. The latter opinion becomes softer if specifically referred to the fasts related to Lent and Ramadan”, explains Radar Swg.
