Deputies postpone discussion of National Guard reform due to attending Sheinbaum

The president of the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, Juan Ramiro Robledo (Morena) postponed the meeting that was scheduled for this Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in which it would discuss and vote on reforms to the Constitution regarding the National Guard.

“…in exercise of the powers that correspond to this Presidency, for reasons of extraordinary agenda and space, the meeting of the Constitutional Affairs Committee that was to take place today is being adjusted to be held now in a semi-presential modality on Thursday, August 22,” it was reported through an official document.

The Morena deputies and their allies from the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) have the majority in this legislative body and were summoned this Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Theater to meet with the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The ruling that the legislators will discuss modifies articles 13, 16, 21, 32, 55, 73, 76, 78, 82, 89, 123 and 129 of the Constitution, so the discussion between opposition and pro-government deputies is expected to last for hours, since the aim is to incorporate the National Guard into the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena).

Currently, there is a ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) that rejected this provision and ordered the reinstatement of the GN to the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), which has not occurred to date.
