This Monday, deputies of the new ruling majority initiated consideration of the issue of expressing no confidence in the mayor of Narva Katri Rajk, a decision on which will be made on Saturday. 18 members of the Narva faction are ready to vote for Raik’s resignation, that is, the absolute majority of the 31 people’s representatives.
Many in Narva believe that Katri Raik can miraculously retain his post. Citizens who want to support the mayor and express their position will gather at the town hall, where the city assembly has recently moved, half an hour before the start of the meeting with the only item on the agenda – an expression of no confidence in the mayor.
One of the key reasons for the expression of no confidence in Katri Raik, his supporters call the poor interaction of the government with the city assembly, a clear confirmation of which, according to them, was the replacement of signs on houses with the names of Narva streets named after the Red Army soldiers, Grafov, Bastrakov, Yukhanov and Gorbach, as well as the streets July 26, for new ones.
This process began last week, after the decision of the Minister of Regional Development Madis Kallas on the renaming came into force on September 1. The new “Narva” faction is confident that Raik should have considered the decisive vote of the Narva deputies, who decided to preserve the names of Soviet soldiers on the streets. Meanwhile, we note that replacing the plates was already a formality – the names in the registers had changed before.
Katri Rajk herself reports that for her the future vote of no confidence organized by the new ruling majority is not a surprise.
She herself is sure that the main reason for her resignation is, in fact, decisions in the field of education.
“It’s even surprising that this is only happening now. They talked about it every month. Alexey Evgrafov and Narva Heaks abandoned the coalition agreement concluded only a month ago. I called many times, tried to arrange meetings, but to no avail. Narva Heaks were looking for other partners,” says Katri Rajk.
She herself is sure that the main reason for her resignation is, in fact, decisions in the field of education.
“I really believe that school and kindergarten directors must speak Estonian and must meet all the requirements. There are offended people. The deputies are united by their resentment towards me. During the coalition negotiations, we did not talk about the development of the city, but only about commissions and councils, but many important tasks were left without discussion,” notes Raik, who fears that many plans and ideas are not being implemented.
Katri Rajk promises to remain in the city council if no confidence is expressed, since she has no other job.
Narva does not yet have a candidate for mayor, or so they say. The new oppositionists doubt that the elections for the head of the city will be easy.
The meeting to express no confidence in Katri Raik will take place on Saturday at 10.00. At 9:30 a.m., supporters of her remaining mayor will gather at City Hall to make their position known.
