Belarus is the first country to implement a fast algorithm for joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Andrei Savinykh, head of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on International Affairs, told reporters, Sputnik writes.
“I am convinced that we are talking about a month. No more,” the parliamentarian assured.
On Wednesday, November 1, deputies of the House of Representatives plan to consider in one reading a memorandum on Belarus’ obligations to obtain the status of a member state of the SCO.
The memorandum describes the procedure for Belarus to join the organization’s documents. First, it must accede to the organization’s Charter, the Shanghai Convention on Combating Terrorism, Separatism and Extremism of June 15, 2001, and the protocols thereto. This must be done before December 31, 2023. There are also two more lists of agreements that will need to be joined by January 15, 2024 and April 15, 2024.
Let us recall that in July 2022 it became known that Belarus had submitted an application to join the SCO. In the fall of the same year, the countries of the organization decided to launch a procedure to grant Belarus member status.
Lukashenko stated in the spring of 2023 that Belarus intends to join the SCO by June. Later, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that the process of Belarus’ accession was nearing completion. The head of Russia, Vladimir Putin, called for this to be done as soon as possible.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an international organization founded on June 15, 2001. Currently it includes India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Our country is still in observer status. As a result of the virtual meeting, the SCO member states officially formalized a memorandum on Belarus’ obligations to join the organization.
