Deripaska assessed the possible impact of the coup in Guinea on the global aluminum market

by time news

A coup d’état in Guinea, which supplies a fifth of the world’s bauxite consumption, could seriously affect the global aluminum market, Oleg Deripaska, a Russian businessman and co-owner of En + and Rusal, wrote on his Telegram channel.

“The aluminum market can be seriously shaken up by this situation, because 20% of the world’s aluminum production uses bauxite from this small and very poor country,” Deripaska wrote. According to UC Rusal’s 2020 report, Guinea accounts for about 40% of the company’s bauxite production and 6% of alumina production.

On the eve of the Guinean edition Guinenews.org reported that the coup attempt in Guinea (a country in western Africa) was crowned with success and the country’s president, Alpha Conde, is in the hands of the special forces that organized the coup. This information was confirmed by the publication Jeune Afrique.

The rebels have shared a photo of the arrested president on social media. According to Jeune Afrique, the rebellion was raised by the commander of the Groupement des forces spéciales (GPS) unit, Lieutenant Colonel Mamadi Dumbuya, who had contradictions with the president’s entourage. A former soldier of the French Foreign Legion, Dumbuya has led this unit since 2018.
