Advisor to the National Committee for Combating Desert Locusts, Hussein Al-Bariki, confirmed, during statements to Al-Ahrar, that the committee worked to combat the spread of desert locusts in a number of Libyan regions, after receiving reports of its presence in those areas.

Al-Buraiki pointed out that the committee appointed a specialized technical team after receiving information at the beginning of this October about the presence of quantities of African locusts on one of the farms in the Sabha region.

The advisor to the National Committee explained that the assigned team performed the necessary control work to the fullest extent, adding that the locusts caused clear damage to fodder crops in Sabha.

Committee Advisor Al-Bariki also confirmed that two fully equipped teams were sent to Traghen, after receiving a report a week ago from the agricultural sector coordinator stating that there were locusts on a number of farms in Traghen.

Al-Buraiki added that the spread of locusts in Traghen was observed in 10 farms with an area of 500 hectares, and work is still continuing in the municipality.

Al-Buraiki stated that yesterday, Monday, reports were also received from the Tazerbu area indicating the presence of locusts in several farms, noting that they had prepared two teams to go to those areas quickly.

The United Nations Agriculture Organization (FAO) had previously expected a proliferation of desert locust swarms in Libya, Morocco and Algeria, noting that a locust swarm can eat the same amount of food as 35,000 people eat per day.
