The Desokupa squatting company, led by the businessman Daniel Esteve, does not achieve its goal in Barcelona of evicting two houses in the Bonanova neighborhood, but it does manage to destabilize the start of the campaign of the municipal authorities of the Catalan capital. Today at midnight the starting gun was given to the race by the Barcelona City Council, and Desokupa and the demonstrations on both sides (the one organized by the company and the pro-squatter) have overshadowed the start of the campaign.
Thousands of people supported the demonstration against the squatters who have become strong in the buildings known as The Kubo and the Ruin. The deployment of the Mossos, however, has prevented the anti-establishment groups from attacking the residents who were protesting against their presence, in a demonstration orchestrated by Desokupa.
As for the squat demonstration, groups of young people have staged clashes with the Mossos d’Esquadra and have caused altercations in the vicinity of the usurped buildings. The level of violence exhibited by the squatters has forced some interventions by the autonomous police force.
Although the intention of the violent acts of the squatters was aimed at a confrontation with the Desokupa company, the Mossos cordon has stopped the meeting.
Esteve had promised in days gone by that he would evict the squatters from the bonanovabut after two meetings with the Mossos and after warnings from the regional authorities, Desokupa renounced the eviction despite having the support of a part of the residents, who complain about the impunity of the anti-system and the passivity of municipal and regional authorities.
