Despair inhabits me – El Comercio

We Ecuadorians should be ashamed because one in three children suffer from chronic child malnutrition, while we give away 4 billion dollars a year to a million vehicle owners who do not need it because they are able to pay the international price of fuel, and to owners of the shrimp industry who have made huge profits by exporting 7.3 billion dollars last year. No candidate is committed to this issue because it is unpopular for the middle class but highly necessary for more than 4 million Ecuadorians who are poor.

When we ask an uninformed people if they prefer that oil not be exploited, we run the risk of giving up 1,200 million dollars every year. The people who receive salaries from the government should know that oil is half the national salary and that there will not be enough resources to, for example, provide drinking water or sewage for people who suffer from these deficiencies that cause chronic diseases.

It is absurd that in Ecuador, which needs resources to get out of underdevelopment, there are employers that do not pay the IESS 2 billion dollars, without the State having done anything to collect this money, that they have even deducted from salaries and have not delivered the personal contribution of the workers. It is also shameful that there are more than 3 billion dollars in unpaid taxes and that governments have not been able to apply criminal sanctions, as occurs in other countries, to those who evade payment through avoidance and evasion of powerful people. For all this hopelessness inhabits me.

A year and a half is a period in which various actions can be taken in favor of economic and social justice, as Clemente Yerovi did in the last century, whose legacy should influence the next president who should be committed to this issue.
