For many years, the doctor series “Dr. House” to my favorite shows. I’ve never succumbed to that addictive factor of wanting to watch several episodes in a row. Rather, I switched on, carefully dosed like a good medicine, week after week and kept the evening intended for this free as far as possible.
For the Berlin writer Sarah Khan, who wrote an essay on “Dr. House” was awarded the Michael Althen Prize for criticism in 2012, it is not strictly speaking a hospital series. For them, “Dr. House” is a kind of homage to the way of thinking of American pragmatism. A bad character can do good. The chronic bad mood with which the drug addict, played by Hugh Laurie, Dr. House’s bullying of his colleagues and even more so his only friend, the oncologist James Wilson, seemed to be a prerequisite for carrying out medical feats.
Treatment room for all conflict situations
There was rarely a triumphant cure at the end of an episode. Rather, Dr. House the patients of their restored health and sent them back to their damaged lives. He didn’t enjoy the social misery of others – he just saw through it and didn’t care. A lack of empathy was the secret motor of that cool rationality that what is called the health system cannot do without.
The local productions have never expected their audiences to experience such artistically presented cynicism. Since 1998, the series “In aller Freundlich” has been running, in which colleague Dr. House is quoted cautiously at best. The alcohol addiction of the surgeon Kai Hoffmann was temporarily discussed. In the partner series “All Friendship – the Young Doctors” broadcast in the ARD evening program, the character of Dr. Moreau and his authoritarian, overbearing leadership style as a close relative of Dr. House through.

In the fictitious Leipzig property clinic, the hospital functions as an ideal-typical repair shop. Social conflicts and problems – racism, gender fluidity, adoption rights, poverty, dementia and much more – are recorded in the form of case histories and carefully treated. The ambitious carer Chris is the all-round understanding of people. In order to save costs for a time-consuming outside shoot, many of the patients suffer their dizzy spells right next to the ambulance. dr Heilmann (Thomas Rühmann), temporarily once the head of the clinic, is often the first responder who happens to be present. In the Sachsenklinik nobody seems to have heard of long waiting times in the emergency room.
Tuesday belongs to the Sachsenklinik
The demonstrative attentiveness of the staff and the pathetically upheld promise of autonomy, according to which each individual counts, have probably contributed to the fact that “In aller Freundlich” is found in the top ten TV ratings on almost every Tuesday. Compared to the experiences that some of us have with the local health system, radiation therapy with the dramas from the Sachsenklinik is tantamount to a pleasant full-body massage. Sometimes I long for the gruffness of Dr. House, my Tuesday night belongs to the Sachsenklinik.
