Despite the term of the Black Sea grain agreement, Ukraine announced on Sunday August 27 that a new cargo ship, hitherto blocked in the port of Odessa, was able to leave the port city thanks to a temporary corridor . Kyiv announced the establishment of the new maritime corridor earlier this month after Russia left the Black Sea grain agreement, which aimed to ensure safe navigation for the transport of grain from Ukrainian ports.

“The bulk carrier Primus flying the Liberian flag and belonging to a Singaporean operator has left the port of Odessa and is using the temporary corridor established for civilian ships,” said the Ukrainian Ministry of Reconstruction, adding that the ship was transporting steel products destined for Africa .

The Black Sea, an essential strategic issue

“This is the second ship to use the temporary corridor for civilian ships,” the statement said. The announcement comes as Russia says it has dispatched a fighter jet to repel a US Air Force reconnaissance drone away from its borders over the Black Sea.

Moscow and kyiv have intensified their military activities in the Black Sea since the failure of the UN-brokered agreement.

Russia shelled Ukrainian port infrastructure at sea and on the Danube, while kyiv attacked Russian ships in its waters and in the Crimean peninsula annexed by Moscow.

The first cargo ship to use Ukraine’s new Black Sea shipping lanes left Odessa last week, kyiv said.
