During an official visit to Moldova, the British Foreign Minister announced that his country would financially assist Moldova and Georgia, but would not transfer defensive weapons to them • Moldova is to receive more than 12 million dollars for “funding for economic and governance reforms, including in the energy sector”

“Britain believes that the best way to protect Moldova from a Russian attack is not by sending military support, but by protecting Ukraine,” said British Foreign Minister James Calverley.

“We strongly believe that one of the best ways to protect Moldova from physical attack is to help the Ukrainians protect themselves from Russian aggression,” the British Foreign Secretary said at a press conference during an official state visit to Moldova.

“Few companies understand the zero-sum tactics of Russian nefarious activity more than Moldova and Georgia,” said Clearly, adding that “Britain will not stand idly by while Moscow blatantly undermines their democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The visit is part of Britain’s plan to announce additional financial support to Moldova and Georgia. Moldova is to receive more than $12m (£10m) in “funding for economic and governance reforms, including in the energy sector”.

“The new pledge to Moldova comes on top of £12 million (over $14 million) already contributing to critical anti-corruption and transparency work in the country,” the UK government said in a statement.

Calverley also announced a donation of more than $600,000 (£500,000) “aimed at creating an environment for free and fair elections in 2024, protecting them from outside interference”.

“The UK is increasing its financial support to Moldova and Georgia as they continue to suffer the destabilizing impact of Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine,” the statement said.
