Exciting News: Destiny: Rising Set to Launch on Mobile Devices
The rumors are true: the Destiny franchise is heading to mobile devices soon. Destiny: Rising is a new free-to-play mobile sci-fi RPG shooter that features a range of playable hero characters, a shared world, and both PvE and PvP modes, all set in Bungie’s Destiny universe.
Developed by China-based NetEase Games, Destiny: Rising emerges from a partnership with Bungie, following a $100 million investment in the studio back in 2018. The game will explore an alternative timeline within the Destiny universe, diving into the post-Dark Age era before the Tower was established and prior to the emergence of the iconic Guardians.
NetEase is licensing the Destiny brand from Bungie and has been granted the creative freedom to develop its own storyline for Destiny: Rising. Stone Shi, senior narrative designer at NetEase, states, “We want to capture and depict a specific time where the reins are in the hands of the players to experience, explore, and define.”
In contrast to Destiny or Destiny 2, players will be able to select from a variety of Destiny hero characters, including ones like Ikora Rey from the previous games, as opposed to creating their own Guardian class based on Hunter, Warlock, or Titan.
Each character will possess unique abilities and backstories, having access to single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes. The game will also retain familiar elements from the Destiny universe, such as Ghosts, Lightbearers, Iron Lords, and Warlords before the establishment of the Last City.
In an available trailer showcasing the game, viewers can witness various characters and their distinctive abilities, including a new void scythe reminiscent of those used by Warlocks in the main Destiny titles. Many well-known enemies, including the Hive, Fallen, and Vex, will also return.
“For over a decade, we have built this universe to contain many unique and wonderful stories, and we are excited to see mobile gamers experience this new take on the Destiny universe created by the team at NetEase,” expressed Terry Redfield, creative lead at Bungie.
Destiny: Rising players will have the option to play in either first-person or third-person view, utilizing touchscreen controls or game controllers. Features such as campaign missions, six-player co-op strikes, and replayable PvE and PvP modes will be included.
Players will also have access to powerful exotic weapons, with the introduction of a new Mythic weapon rarity class that includes novel weapon types. These weapons will help players battle against darkness enemies found in new locations such as Jiangshi and the Red Sea Rift.
As anticipation builds for Destiny: Rising, a major inquiry arises concerning its monetization system. While NetEase has not yet provided a concrete answer, they have stated that a “significant portion of the main campaign will be available” during the alpha test next month, along with “at least one map for all game modes” to allow players a taste of the gameplay.
Destiny: Rising will initially launch as a limited access closed alpha test on November 1st in the US and Canada, with registration available through NetEase’s website.
