Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: The American news network CNN said, quoting an informed American source, that American and Iranian delegations met in two separate hotels in Doha, prior to the announcement of the prisoner exchange agreement between the two countries, which took two and a half years with Qatari mediation.
And Iran and the United States announced – last Thursday – that they had reached an agreement to release billions of dollars frozen to Iran, in exchange for an exchange of prisoners between the two countries, provided that the money would be transferred to accounts in Qatar.
CNN quoted US officials as saying that Doha hosted the two negotiating delegations and acted as a mediator to convey messages between the two parties, noting that the negotiations between the Iranian and American sides were not direct, but rather through the Qatari mediator, and made it clear that the agreement was reached 6 months ago.
According to the American Network, Washington had reservations about announcing the agreement until the first step was taken by Iran to transfer the prisoners, and US officials confirmed that Qatari diplomats played a role in preserving and making the negotiations a success.
The Minister of State at the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, confirmed that Qatar played a vital and decisive role as a facilitator and reliable international mediator to reach this agreement, and expressed the hope of the State of Qatar that this step would lead to an agreement on the nuclear file.
For his part, John Kirby, Strategic Communications Coordinator at the US National Security Council, said that the State of Qatar was a distinguished friend, and expressed his gratitude for the Qatari role in concluding the agreement.
Kirby added that what is being talked about is placing part of Iran’s frozen funds in accounts to be used for humanitarian purposes only, describing what has been achieved as a positive step, and expressing his hope that this step will be completed with the return of the detainees.
During the past years, the Iranian authorities released some foreign detainees, in steps that coincided with the release of Iranians detained in foreign countries.
