Detained opposition member hospitalized under custody

The former deputy and opposition leader Williams Dávilaarrested last week in Venezuela amid a wave of arrests for protests poselectoraleswas hospitalized in “serious condition,” his son reported yesterday.

“He was admitted with a high fever and a dehydration deep and deep urinary infection that turned into acute prostatitis with the risk of septicemia,” said Williams Dávila Valeri, who previously reported on X that his father was “in serious condition.”

“He is being treated at the hospital in Caracas Clinics in the custody of the Sebin (intelligence service). We have not been able to see him yet,” he added.

Dávila, 73 years old and recently operated on his heart, was arrested on Thursday at the end of an opposition vigil in a square Caracas calling for the release of “political prisoners.” More than 2,400 people were arrested for protesting against the reelection of Nicolas Maduro, on July 28, which the opposition calls fraudulent.

Venezuelan authorities have not commented on the leader’s arrest or the crimes he is accused of.
