It’s the almost perfect narrative. In the case of Christian Sewing, CEO of Deutsche Bank, it probably didn’t take much imagination to create it. A man from East Westphalia works his way up from a trainee at Deutsche Bank to its CEO. Even without having to know the virtues of the East Westphalians in detail, it is easy to make a judgment: the man is down-to-earth, knows where he comes from, and is able to convey security and stability. Exactly the right thing for a bank that is facing the ruins of its own identity in 2018.
