From 2 to 12 August, the Festival brings 17 promises into competition, with a prominent place for Italian cinema
The program of the 76th Locarno Film Festival, directed by Giona A. Nazzaro (from 2 to 12 August) has in its portfolio some career awards, to the British actor Riz Ahmed, to Pietro Scalia, to the great Tsai Ming-liang, to Renzo Rossellini. The inaugural film will be «L’étoile filante», a comedy co-signed by Abel and Gordon. Among the guests Lambert Wilson, Ken Loach with the film “The old oak” and finally Cate Blanchett as producer of “Shayda” by Noora Niasari, the story of a courageous Iranian mother with a 6-year-old daughter refugee in Australia, while the film will be seen ” Anatomie d’un chute» by Justine Triet.
In competition 17 promises, from Lav Diaz to the humor of Radu Jude, with a film contested by Venice. A total of 17 films, including 9 world premieres, in Piazza Grande: among others “Falling stars” by Richard Karpala and Gabriel Bienczycki and “Theater camp” by Molly Gordon. This year our cinema will have a prominent place, two films in the Piazza («Non sono quel che sono», re-reading of Othello by Edoardo Leo, «La bella estate» by Laura Luchetti, by Cesare Pavese, with Deva Cassel, daughter of Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassell), two in competition («Patagonia» by Simone Bozzelli and «Rossosperanza» by Annarita Zambrano) as well as «Mimì the prince of darkness», out of competition, by Brando De Sica, son of Christian.
This festival will be the 23rd and last of president Marco Solari who directed the event like a wise, liberal father: «With a team that has become a family, but the generations go on, time passes». Solari closes with an edition that is in his line, with many Italian titles: Solari has always considered Locarno «a festival above all free and very Italian and Lombard, certainly artistic but also political, to strengthen the canton of Ticino. 23 years of continuous exams, but of happy evenings, an exercise in freedom».
