Thousands of Devotees Gather in Rameswaram for Mahalaya Amavasai

Chennai: The holy occasion of Mahalaya Amavasai saw an overwhelming gathering of devotees from various districts outside Chennai in Rameswaram. The devotees flocked to the temple located on the banks of rivers in Tamil Nadu to offer Darpanam to their ancestors and seek their blessings.

Mahalaya Amavasai holds immense significance for Hindu devotees as it is believed that their ancestors attain peace of the soul when they perform tarpanam and bath in sacred water bodies on this auspicious day. Among the other special days for ancestors’ worship are Aadi Amavasi, Tai Amavasi, and Mahalaya Amavasi, which fall on different dates throughout the year.

Today, October 14, marks the new moon of Mahalaya, and a large number of devotees gathered in Rameswaram to partake in the sacred rituals. The highlight of the day was the holy dip in Rameswaram Agni Theertha, followed by the offering of thithi and tarpanam to their ancestors.

The spiritual fervor extended beyond Rameswaram, with devotees also offering tarpanam to their ancestors at other significant spiritual sites across Tamil Nadu. Trichy Srirangam Amma Mandapam, Namakkal District, Moganur Cauvery River, Vedaranyam, Erode Kodumudi, Bhavani Kuduthurai, and various temples were among the locations where devotees sought the blessings of their ancestors.

Ensuring the safety and security of the massive gathering, 750 policemen were deployed in Rameswaram. Their presence helped maintain order and ensured that the devotees could fully immerse themselves in the spiritual experience without any hindrances.

The devotion and dedication exhibited by thousands of devotees on this auspicious occasion of Mahalaya Amavasai only reinforces the deep-rooted faith and cultural traditions that continue to be treasured by the people of Tamil Nadu.

As the day drew to a close, the devotees, satisfied with their worship, returned to their respective homes, carrying with them the blessings of their forefathers and cherishing the spiritual fulfillment experienced during the sacred ceremonies.
