Clashes between fans and police are becoming more and more common in Bundesliga stadiums. The DFB is watching the development with concern.

Frankfurt/Main.

In response to the increasing clashes between fans and police in Bundesliga stadiums, the German Football Association has called on both sides to treat each other more respectfully.

“We view current developments with concern. The DFB is interested in criminals being prosecuted, especially if they exploit football for their own purposes. There should be no blanket criminalization of fans, just as there should be no prejudgment of police measures,” the association said in response to a dpa request.

Massive riots again and again

There have been massive riots at football games recently. The sad climax was the riots at the end of November during the Eintracht Frankfurt game against VfB Stuttgart, with more than 200 people injured. “The results of the game show that there is a risk of a loss of control in the arenas,” said the sports policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Stephan Mayer, afterwards.

A good seven months before the home European Championships, the topic should be discussed in detail at the Interior Ministers’ Conference in Berlin. Hamburg’s Interior and Sports Senator Andy Grote had already called for consequences in mid-November. “I’m a bit tired of the fact that after so many games we always have to discuss violence and arguments afterwards,” said the SPD politician.

With a view to the European Championships, the DFB is primarily relying on a dialogue between everyone involved. The aim is to “create the best possible conditions for an exciting, peaceful and safe tournament in our own country,” said the association. (dpa)
